Were you are ever taught how to look for a job or how to manage and progress your career?
Winding your way through the maze known as the job seeking process is fraught with feelings of anxiety, fear and
self doubt. First you have to figure out WHAT you want to do and you have to convincingly connect your skills, accomplishments, education and expertise to prove to others you are capable of doing it! Then you have to overcome the challenges of getting your resume noticed and getting some facetime with an actual person. And what about the interview? You know you can do the job, but how do you differentiate yourself in a convincing and confident way that gets you the job offer?
And the game has changed!
These days you have to navigate through job boards, online application tracking systems, social media, networking, interviewing, self branding and, oh yeah, did you know that every resume and cover letter has to be customized to the job posting to which you're applying?
This January, I'm bringing back my popular Career Bootcamp seminars.
For these bootcamps, I will be partnering with career development coach Meg Franko of Meg Franko Coaching. Meg works to help purpose-driven leaders, emerging talent, and aspiring professionals to realize their full potential and is committed to supporting others to make their own impact, one committed, inspired individual at a time. The AHJL Career Bootcamp is an intensive 3 hour, interactive, small-group session
that's specially designed to help get you out of your job-seeking rut, make your mind sparkle with fresh ideas and give you a new perspective on how to market and brand your unique skills and experiences to differentiate yourself and get noticed by employers.
For many job seekers, they feel powerless. Applying for random jobs and crossing their fingers that someone recognizes their value.
In fact, as a job seeker you have a TON of power.
The majority of your power comes from your FOCUS which is the most important strategy for a successful job search.
Your focus is the clarity of your brand promise.
Your brand promise is a confident, authentic connection that spells out your experience, your accomplishments, your skills and your career progression. This is the COGNITIVE connection that gives people the
rational understanding of why you are a serious candidate and how your background translates to the job you are applying.
But your brand promise should also spell out in EMOTIONAL terms why you would be a good fit. Your personality fits the culture. Your enthusiasm would be a great motivator for others. Your passion aligns with THEIR passion for the organization. Your confidence gives THEM a feeling of confidence. How you display emotional intelligence indicates you'd be easy to work with and a productive employee.
Connected (emotional and cognitive) these elements give people what I call a clear "imagination moment" where they immediately understand your value proposition and why it is valuable to them and how it is connected to the job you are applying.
YOU HAVE POWER in all of your job seeking touch points: those things where you have an opportunity to persuade and convince others of your authentic value. Your job seeking touch points are your resume, your cover letters, your LinkedIN profile, your networking conversations and of course, in your
interview.
Get used to customizing your resumes in ways that connects you to the jobs you are applying. Get used to writing kick-ass cover letters that are not just a recitation of your resume, but have anecdotal stories of achievement as well reasons why you are applying.
And perhaps most important: When you are in an interview, the most common first question you'll get is: "So, can you tell us about yourself?"
This is your first and greatest power opportunity to take control of the interview and to direct your answer to why you are the BEST candidate they will hear from. Be confident. Be authentic. And be prepared with your amazing stories of accomplishment and success that show why you'd be the most valuable addition to their organization.
